So, I saw this film when it was first released on video... nigh until a decade ago... but I could not for the life of me, all these years... remember the title. You'd be surprised what fucks me every time I tells ya searches result when you search the few details I was able to recall: Japanese zombie musical. Finally I made Damon apply his fucks me every time I tells ya search magic, and of course he found it immediately.
Katakuri-ke no kôfuku or The Happiness of the KatakurisIf you know the director, Takashi Miike... you may think you have a clue what to expect. But this... this is weird even for him. I'm still trying to figure out how it made it past the censors at Blockbuster.
A family moves to the country to open a bed and breakfast. Much time passes with no guests... then, all of a sudden they get their first guest. He kills himself. Then they get their second guest, he dies during sex and crushes his partner. ...etc, etc, etc... Of course the family does not want the bad press surrounding death to be attached to their inn, so they 'take care of it.' They bury the bodies nearby... as a family.
The aspect of the film that's 'magical' is the musical, the manner in which they 'deal' with their issues. Rather than simply respond to the deaths, they sing about it, dance about it, even. It's so over the top, there is nothing comparable. This film is a one of kind. And the soundtrack... it's so karaoke-ready.
If I may utilize the half star rating? I give it a 4 and 1/2 out of 5.
